Java One 2007: Day Zero

This was largely a non-day. The four-hour flight from MSP to SFO was mildly interesting - the guy next to me was a software consultant, so we had much to talk about (he got me interested in trying out some object databases). My seat was annoying, though - it was worn out and would recline slowly without me realizing it; I would suddenly be hitting the knees of the poor long-legged woman in the seat behind mine. So I tried to sit forward as much as possible, which gave me a bit of a backache since it was such an odd position.

Once I got to SFO, I took a cab to the hotel. My room is a corner room on the 18th floor, which gives me two great views. I walked over to the Moscone Center, got registered for the conference, and picked up my obligatory JavaOne backpack. I've got three others at home.

I grabbed some Indian takeout at a place called Naan N' Curry across the street from my hotel, and used the remainder of the evening to get some rest. That included watching tonight's episode of Heroes. You know a show is a good show when an hour feels like too little time for the episode! There are only a couple more episodes left this season, and it definitely has that "careening toward the finale" feel at this point.

Tomorrow JavaOne starts in earnest for me. Let's hope the sessions I'm signed up for turn out to be good ones!

Can I sleep more?

It seems lately I haven't been able to get enough sleep. I always intend to go to bed earlier, but there's always "just a few things" I want to get done before I go to bed. Of course, these things always tend to expand and fill up quite a bit of time at night, so I end up going to bed only four or five hours before I need to wake up. I'm pretty sure this lack of sleep is affecting my life in many areas. I know there are days at work where I'm not as sharp as I should be. I drink coffee to make up the difference, but the inevitable caffeine crash puts me on a bit of an alertness roller coaster.

I'm making a goal for myself to start averaging an hour more sleep a night than I have been the last few months. I'll start small and work up to a full eight hour night. Hopefully this will help me start catching up on some of that oh-so-important shuteye.
